Blog Post #7: Green Jello’s 3 little pigs

When watching Walt Disney’s 3 little pigs in class last week I was reminded of another animated version of the tale that I have seen. Like Walt Disney’s version this one made good use of music in this case it’s an actual music video making it even more dependant on sound than Disney’s version. The videowas created by the band Green Jello a comedy rock band who makes a lot of music videos with a unique visual element to them sometimes using animation. Their version of the 3 little pigs is no exception making good use of claymation to tell the band’s own unique version of the 3 little pigs. The video was quite successful and recievd quite a bit of airplay on MTV around the time of it’s release.

This version of the three little pigs differs quite a bit from Disney’s version. It’s set in a contemporary setting with the 3 little pigs moving to hollywood and isn’t exactly child friendly with it’s violence and drug references. The lyrics of the song tell the story of the 3 little pigs as the music plays in the background. The famous lines “little pig, little pig, let me in. Not by the hair of my chinny chin chin” are likewise sung with appropriate voices for both the wolf and the pigs. Another great way in which the music any animation mix well is the scene when Rambo kills the big bad wolf. When Rambo fires his machine gun the drums are played loudly and rapidly to sound like a machine gun matching the action in the animation quite well. The video and song are so well intertwed it would be hard to experience them seperatley. The video without the music would lose some of it’s humor and it would be hard to hear the music without visualizing the video.
